Key Job Summary
NRL’s Laboratory Technologists, also known as medical laboratory Technologists or medical laboratory scientists, are allied health professionals who perform a variety of duties regarding the receipt, preparation, analysis, and disposal of specimens for laboratory testing. They conduct routine tests, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment, perform Quality Control (QC) testing on equipment, solutions and reagents and maintain supplies required for laboratory operations. They work with the Directors and managers in various departments of the laboratory: for example, hematology, routine
chemistry, microbiology, etc. Laboratory Technologists have a critical role in the successful execution and implementation of the Quality Management System (QMS) in all phases of the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical laboratory processes.
Within their specific department, each Laboratory Technologist ensures quality specimens for laboratory testing. They follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to produce timely and accurate data for patients, QC results, and Proficiency Testing (PT) results. The laboratory technologist works to meet or exceed regulatory requirements.
Scope
This job description applies to all Laboratory Technologists employed by NRL
Key Responsibilities
1. Prepares and/or reconstitutes control materials and reagents: Determine the correct number of components for the sample, control or standard and accurately measure and mix each component.
Appropriately identify container each with the name of the material, date prepared, date of expiration and initials of preparer.
2. Receive specimens for testing: Unpack specimens from shipping containers and assign log numbers using appropriate safety and security measures. Identify unsatisfactory specimens based on defined criteria and process patient orders using the laboratory information systems (LIS) as required.
3. Prepare specimens for testing: Perform centrifugation functions if needed: aliquot specimens into properly labelled tubes as required for multiple tests and prepare slides if required.
4. Use appropriate sterilization or decontamination techniques: Clean equipment and laboratory areas and safely dispose of contaminated waste; autoclave, wash or acid clean reusable glassware as required.
5. Ensure adequate inventory: Assess equipment and supplies to ensure enough are available for anticipated laboratory workload; order supplies, as necessary.
6. Provide supplies to clients as needed: Assemble and distribute specimen collection and shipping kits following regulations covering shipment of biological and/or hazardous materials; maintain
records of distributed supplies.
7. Perform Preventative Maintenance: Perform and document routine maintenance according to manufacturer’s guidelines and NRL’s procedures. Document all actions and take corrective measures when necessary.
8. Perform QC and PT: Perform quality control analysis and proficiency testing according to defined procedures.
9. Test samples according to established procedures: Perform, without deviation, all analyses and result reporting according to the associated SOPs.
10. Satisfy regulatory requirements: Ensure that all regulatory agency guidelines are met including those mandated by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi (HAAD), the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 15189:2012, the Joint Commission (JCI) and other relevant accrediting bodies.
11. Actively participate in continuous quality improvement: Review specific processes for improvement opportunities and bring ideas to the attention of the department supervisor
12. Packing and shipping: Prepare specimens for shipment following local and international regulations and defined procedures.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
Qualifications: BSc in Medical Technology / Laboratory Technology or Biomedical Science
Licensure: DHA practice license for Dubai, DOH license for Abu Dhabi
Experience:
Minimum of three (3) years in a clinical laboratory.
As per PQR, recent UAE National graduates are exempted from.
experience requirements and are not required to do internship post-graduation.
UAE Nationals with gap in their experience are not exempted from experience requirements. Internship/training experience is required.
Language: Fluent in English, a second language an advantage
